In the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War, Rose arrives in a remote German village disguised as a man and claiming to be the heir to a long-abandoned estate. With the village struggling to recover from years of war and poverty, Rose gradually earns the trust of the local community and begins building a new life for herself. She grows close to Suzanna, the daughter of a prosperous farmer, and their relationship soon develops into something deeper. But Rose's entire existence rests on a lie: she has taken the identity of a dead man, and discovery would threaten not only her inheritance but also her place in the village and the future she has found with Suzanna.
